Turning Garbage Into Valuable Products

A Green and Cleaner Nairobi

A half of the over 500 thousand tons of garbage that fills dump-sites in Nairobi can be composted.  It is estimated that an average single family in Nairobi throws away about 50 pounds of food scraps and other wastes every month.
The past few years have seen an encouraging trend in the way waste is managed in the Kenyan capital. The proliferation of private waste management companies has made Nairobi an environmentally friendly city.  The waste management companies compete to collect trash and they get handsome financial rewards for their efforts.
The city waste can be well utilized if the trash can be recycled into valuable composite used to make enrich soil for farming and landscaping. Recycling also helps to reduce methane, a by-product of landfill and other organic waste that is released.
